sugimori-hajimeThe International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) regrets to announce the passing of Professor Hajime Sugimori of Fukuoka, Japan who died on July 19 at the age of 82. Professor Sugimori was a member of IGCS Council from 1989 to 1993, served as Vice President in 1999 and was the Scientific Program Chair of the 6th IGCS Biennial Meeting in 1997 in Fukuoka, Japan.

He also served as President of the International Federation Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy from 1995-1999.

Professor Sugimori studied medicine at the Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan and conducted a research fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical School in New York, NY from 1966-1967 before returning to Kyushu University as Assistant Professor from 1971-1979.

Since 1979, Dr. Sujimori was the Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Saga Medical School, and in 2000, became the President of the Medical School, a position from which he retired in 2004. Following this retirement, he became the President of the Takagi Educational Institute and Professor at the International University of Health and Welfare in Japan.

Professor Sugimori is survived by his wife Yukiko, one son Hiroshi Sugimori, two daughters Miki Takamatsu and Yae Odashima, as well as one grandson and five granddaughters.

His friend and colleague, Dr. Steven Silverberg said, “Professor Hajime Sugimori was a leader in gynecologic oncologic in Japan and the world, a great supporter of and tireless worker for IGCS, and a valued friend and colleague to me; we will all miss him.”
