richard-barakatDear Colleagues,

I am enthusiastic to share this update on all the exciting things that have been occurring within our Society these past couple of months:

2016 Council Election Results

We recently completed the 2016 Council election process and the voting members have elected eight new members to the IGCS Council. As I mentioned in April, the Council increased transparency of the nominations process, allowing members to self-nominate by submitting applications for the Nominating Committee to consider in its deliberations. Dr. Lynette Denny did an outstanding job as Nominating Committee Chair to ensure that the policies approved by Council were effective in achieving our goals.

We are grateful to all the members who were interested in a position on the IGCS Council and pleased that Society has so many international leaders willing to serve. We look forward to creating opportunities for members to become further involved in the Society. I am confident that you, the members, will provide new and exciting ideas and initiatives to keep the Society innovative and recognized as the premier international society for gynecologic cancers.

Awards and Recognition
The Society has recognized excellent leaders within our specialty for many years. Recently, the Council approved the expansion of our recognition and awards program to celebrate members and their contributions to our field. New awards include the Lifetime Achievement Award, Excellence in Teaching Award, Global Humanitarian Award and an Award for Community Advancement in the Developing World. The Council has chosen the individuals who will receive these awards for the first time at the 2016 Biennial Meeting in Lisbon. I know you will help me in congratulating these outstanding leaders.

Website Redesign and Launch
As you know, the Council made the decision to invest resources to redesign our website, The Council continues to receive regular updates from IGCS staff and web developers on the progress of the redesign and is working with CEO, Mary Eiken and the new Education Committee Chair, Dr. Kathleen Schmeler, to provide feedback on the development of fresh content and features. We are extremely pleased with the progress made thus far; the site will dramatically improve the online experience of members and visitors. Many of you have provided feedback through our surveys over the last 3 months and I appreciate you taking the time to voice your preferences and how you use the website. We plan to launch the new website just prior to the 2016 Biennial Meeting in Lisbon and showcase all the new features during the meeting. We are very excited to reveal the new IGCS brand!

2016 Biennial Meeting
As for the upcoming Biennial Meeting in Lisbon, I could not be more pleased with the program that Dr. Uzi Beller and Dr. Christian Marth have complied. I am very grateful for their commitment to delivering such an outstanding program and all their hard work over the last nine months. The meeting is about twelve weeks away and will have many excellent presentations, debates and discussions on topics relevant to all IGCS members. As a reminder, the early registration savings deadline is approaching fast – July 26. I encourage you to register if you have not done so already and take advantage of this discounted rate. And please make sure to secure your ticket to the Networking Event which will take place at the iconic Praça do Comércio on the evening of October 30.

Also, IGCS is happy to provide meeting space to anyone who wishes to have an ancillary meeting at the Conference Center in Lisbon. If you are interested, please contact Mary Eiken our CEO at and she can get you in touch with the appropriate individuals to secure space.

To allow members to share some of the latest science and discoveries in the field, we will have a late-breaking session in Lisbon and are currently accepting late-breaking abstracts through August 10.

My time as president is nearing an end and I could not be more pleased with the progress and changes that have been put into place and for those that will to continue to develop over time. I always welcome your feedback and input; IGCS is your Society. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts and suggestions regarding IGCS business through the administrative office of IGCS at

I look forward to seeing many of you in Lisbon – we have much to celebrate!
